What a week!
Too short, too much, too tangled to get a grip, but the light’s at the end of the tunnel. Rats, it’s the approaching Roadrunner Train.
Squeezed up against a wall, I watched new member Gemma’s Icebreaker roar through, cracking glaciers down to Antarctica. With her speech ‘Work, Family and Passions’ Gemma wove stories of excitement, humour and self deprecating insight.
We are pleased to welcome Gemma to the group.
Robyn’s connections to the Coast to Coast span 30 odd years which lent an authenticity to her speech on the subject that many would be unable to match for information and entertainment. Packed with personal observations and experiences, Robyn’s stories cast us into the event.
Greenhouse Gasses, Global Warming and Garry all begin with the 7th letter, though this coincidence has nothing to do with the choice of subject presented today. Garry’s connection with environmental issues is a marriage of many years, no brief fling.
Possibly the most environmentally aware of our group, he strongly drove home the issue that still has a few agnostic or even atheist adherents. The most telling line that stuck in my skull was that a car engine running in an enclosed garage provides a recognised means of self annihilation. Most would be able to extrapolate that image out into the wider environment.
Table Topics today was a well presented exercise of Carol’s with a score sheet based upon 3 criteria. All stories were entertaining though some fulfilled the terms of engagement better than others. It was pointed out that the judging became more lenient as the competition progressed.
Top marks went to Jordan, John, and Tom.
A remarkable first from last weeks meeting ought to be mentioned here: Kathy is the first Sunrise Toastmaster to present a speech from her bed.
With ‘My Favourite Things.’ Kathy allowed an insight into her horizontal development, the continual joy of prone perceptions and why her brother said upon her marriage that the family was losing a member but gaining a couch.
Sunrise Toastmasters meets every Thursday at 7am at the Knox Centre 28 Bealey Ave, Christchurch.
