Stick moustaches and googly eyes on inanimate objects

“Stick moustaches and googly eyes on inanimate objects,” said Jesse, our third speaker at this morning's toastmasters meeting, before passing out a range of both for club members to take away.

Jesses speech was about Situationism and rebellions that occurred around the world in1968.

Previously Tom delivered an extended version of the speech he first gave last week about unconscious prejudice. With less reliance on notes than previously, he engaged more easily with the audience. By the time the International Competition comes around we may have a serious contender for the national title here.

Jacquie gave a speech about her work colleague Miriam’s concussions. Miriam’s story was brought to life with Jacquie’s extensive vocabulary and retentive memory excellently illustrating Miriam's fight back from misfortune.

By writing potential subjects on the whiteboard, Carol gave all Table Topic speakers forward knowledge of subjects and a pointer to structure of presentation.

Everybody chosen was able to give a good mini speech within cooee of their allotted times. Prize for the best of the day went to Marg whose subject was a choice between Minted Lamb or Peeking* Duck.

Each of today’s Evaluators gave value to their respective speakers. Joel’s was particularly masterful and I believe everybody was surprised when told that it was his very first evaluation.

Jordan grasped everyone’s attention as he delivered the General Evaluation with a fine mixture of pertinent recommendations and good natured cheeky humour following the theme of the day.

With the opposite of rambunctiousness, (word of the day) Toastmaster of the day, George, optimistically grabbed ‘Summertime’ as the meeting’s theme and the weather too came to the party.

As with so many Sunrise Meetings, members came away informed, invigorated and inspired by the entertainment and stories they’d experienced.

Public speaking can be helpful in so many areas, from confidence building, adding to leadership skills or simply communication development.

Anyone can come along and check out a Sunrise Meeting.
