Out in the sun on a glorious spring day, Kate and I decided ice cream would add to our joys.
For decades, Tip-Top Boysenberry Trumpets have been a favourite, so an easy choice was made at the dairy.
Upon first-lick, we felt something was wrong. These were not the trumpets of old, these were different. The chocolate was strange, and although there was boysenberry flavour it lacked true pulped substance. Worst of all though, the ice cream was no longer the creamy Tip-Top of the good-old-&-not so-long-ago-days.
Aside from crossing Trumpet from my favourite ice cream list, I thought nothing more about that, until I was subjected to an interminable moronic advertisement on television.
Pushing Trumpets in a U.S. cartoon environment woke a lightbulb up above my head. My ears resounded to an oogah-oogah Claxton, the brain whirred, clicking to a stop with the realisation that our favourite ice cream has been globalised.
Our Tip Top Trumpets are now formulated for maximum profit and a global taste for mediocrity.
Checking out Google I find Tip Top was sold in 2019 to ‘global ice cream company Froneri.’ With headquarters in England, Froneri is 50% owned by french firm PIA Partners and 50% by Nestlé, the Swiss company pushing to own the world's water supplies.
Following the predatory nature of Nestlé's foray into the US market, <https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/29/the-fight-over-water-how-nestle-dries-up-us-creeks-to-sell-water-in-plastic-bottles> we ought now be on high alert to lobbying and dirty dealings close to home before our natural resources are sucked dry.
I accept change is constant and that what we decide is for the better or worse will be subjective.
New kids will know no difference and maybe some will make this new version of the Tip-Top Trumpet their favourite for decades to come.
As for us, we have seen the last of our creamy Tip-Top Trumpet days but know there are still many natural creamy Kiwi ice creams out there for us to lick.
